Dr. Karen has always carried a deep compassion for senior and ailing pets, recognizing early in her career the profound importance of helping them pass peacefully—at home, in the arms of those who love them most. In 2018, she founded Peaceful Passing to provide in-home euthanasia services for families in the Fresno and Clovis areas, with the goal of ensuring that every pet’s final moments are marked by dignity, comfort, and grace.
She is often asked how she can do this work every day. Dr. Karen explains: “Though it is hard, I believe I am helping our beloved pets carry out their final wishes when it’s time—to be at home, surrounded by all that they love, and to pass peacefully in their sleep. It is what any of us would want as well.”
Dr. Karen believes that a peaceful goodbye at home is one of the most meaningful gifts an owner can give. In her experience, pets are noticeably more at ease in familiar surroundings, and she feels honored to support both animals and their families during such a tender and sacred time.
A native of Fresno County, Dr. Karen grew up in the foothill communities of Dunlap and Miramonte. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Management from UC Davis, where her passion for animal care first began to flourish. As a young entrepreneur, she ran a mobile petting zoo that visited schools, birthday parties, and libraries, using her diverse menagerie—from iguanas and frogs to ducklings and lambs—to inspire children to care for animals with kindness and respect.
She went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis in 2006 and began her career in mixed animal practice, treating dairy cattle, horses, dogs, and cats. Later, she shifted her focus exclusively to companion animals. During a break from private practice, she pursued a Master’s in Public Health and became board-certified in Veterinary Preventive Medicine, broadening her expertise while deepening her commitment to community well-being.
Today, Dr. Karen resides in Fresno (though she dreams of one day returning to country life). She continues to devote her heart and skills to providing gentle end-of-life care for pets, while also volunteering with Pathfinders youth ministry, backpacking in the Sierras, and warmly welcoming friends into her home.
