FAQs
The total cost includes the in-home pet euthanasia service fee, any travel fee (if any apply), and a platform fee. Additionally, depending on your choice, fees may apply for cremation services or keepsakes.
During your appointment, your vet will confirm your aftercare selection with you. If you choose to arrange cremation services, your vet will oversee your pet’s transportation to a local facility for cremation. If your preferred cremation option includes the return of your pet’s ashes to you, your vet will discuss the process to reunite you with your pet's ashes and the anticipated time frame during your appointment
Yes, upon arrival the veterinarian will assess your pet. This can look different than an “nose to tail” examination in a clinic setting and will focus more on the pet’s history and quality of life.
It is not uncommon to have doubts about whether the time is right. If you’ve taken the Quality of Life Questionnaire and are still unsure, we recommend consulting with your family veterinarian before scheduling an appointment.
Rest assured, if you book an appointment, your in-home euthanasia veterinarian will let you know if they do not believe that euthanasia is appropriate at this time.
You can expect your veterinarian to be in your home from 20-60 minutes, depending on how much of that time you need or want throughout the process.
At-home pet euthanasia with CodaPet’s network of veterinarians provides loving, end-of-life care when you need it most. Once you schedule a visit online, you will receive a confirmation, and your vet will make sure everything is arranged with care and clarity.
When your vet arrives, they’ll begin with a gentle assessment to reassure you of your decision and answer any questions you may have. Your vet will always move at your pace, giving you the time and space you need to say goodbye in your own way.
When you are ready, your vet will gently administer a sedative so your pet can relax and drift into a deep, peaceful sleep. After the sedation has fully taken effect, a final, humane medication is given, allowing for a calm and painless passing surrounded by love.
If you choose aftercare, your vet will respectfully care for your pet and transport them for cremation, handling every step with dignity and compassion.
Signs your pet may be suffering include chronic pain, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, inability to stand or walk, or a loss of interest in daily activities. These symptoms could indicate a decline in their quality of life. You know your pet better than anyone, but speaking to a veterinarian can help you assess whether euthanasia is the most compassionate option. If you feel you need more help, you can read our guide on ‘How will I know it’s time’, take a quality of life assessment, or call customer care at (706) 389-1072.
If your pet's health is declining rapidly, it’s crucial to take the following steps:
- Consult Your Veterinarian: Schedule an appointment to discuss your observations and any scoring from a quality-of-life scale. This information can help guide the conversation about your pet's condition and options moving forward. Your vet may suggest palliative care, hospice, or, if necessary, euthanasia.
- Ensure Comfort: Create a quiet, cozy space with soft bedding and easy access to food, water, and a litter box (if applicable).
- Minimize Stress: Keep routines simple and familiar, and limit loud noises or disruptions.
- Offer Gentle Care: Provide a soothing touch through gentle petting and offer favorite treats if they can still eat.
- Consider At-Home Euthanasia: If appropriate, discuss the option of at-home euthanasia with your vet for a peaceful and familiar passing.
- Reach Out for Support: It's okay to lean on loved ones, pet-loss support groups, or counselors to help navigate this difficult time.
If you're noticing signs of declining health, we encourage you to use our quality of life scale assessment to evaluate your pet's condition before your vet visit.
The key difference is the setting. At home euthanasia allows your pet to pass peacefully in the comfort of their familiar surroundings, reducing stress and anxiety. This option especially benefits pets who may feel scared or uncomfortable traveling to a clinic. It also offers your family a private, intimate experience during this emotional time. While some urgent situations don’t allow for time to schedule in-home euthanasia, many pet owners in Athens choose in-home services for the peaceful atmosphere and compassionate care their pets receive right where they feel safest. You can find flexible availability for our local vets here, or look for same-day euthanasia appointments.
No, pet euthanasia at home is designed to be completely painless. After an initial end-of-life assessment, your veterinarian will first administer a sedative to ensure your pet is relaxed and comfortable. Dr Dover was so empathetic and informative throughout the whole process. I knew my pups were in good hands. She took extra special care and made sure we had all the time we needed. Grateful for such a gift to be able to give my senior dogs.
We had to say goodbye to our nearly sixteen year old cat, Popcorn, after she suddenly was diagnosed as terminally ill and was clearly suffering and wouldn't eat, even with appetite stimulants among other meds. Dr. Dawn Fitzhugh came out the day after we set up the appointment and was just wonderful. She was so kind and empathetic and explained everything that was going on extremely well every step of the way, allowing Popcorn to pass with dignity in the comfort of her own home. Dr. Dawn was just who we needed on one of the hardest days of our lives, I can't say enough good about her and the at home pet euthanasia service.
Saying good-bye to my beloved cat and having to have him put to sleep was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Margaret was so kind and compassionate. Having her come to my home was truly a blessing. If anyone is ever in this situation, I highly recommend Codapet.
Having to decide to put one of my fur babies to sleep, then actually going through it, then trying to make life normal again with a huge part of it gone…it’s been a lot. we decided on an at-home euthanasia. We used CodaPet - At Home Pet Euthanasia . I highly recommend them as you’ll see below. That morning, we took Karma (14yo Min Schnauzer) and Lindy (3yo Min Schnauzer) for a drive to go get some people food that Karma always wanted, but was never allowed to have. We got her ChicfilA chicken minis, pup cups from Starbucks, and pepperoni pizza from Domino’s. 🥹 she was so happy to woof down a whole bunch of people food! We had ordered two kits to do paw imprints. The kits arrived 15 minutes before the vet did. We were crying and scrambling to try and get impressions done when the vet arrived. I asked for 15 minutes. She said, “Sure, but may I make a suggestion?” I told her of course. “This process is only stressing her and you out. Let’s say goodbye to her first. Then I can help clean her paws up and help you get impressions.” She was right. Karma didn’t understand what we’re doing. That put us all at ease to love on her one last time before we said goodbye. The vet, Dr Diana Phillips, was SO compassionate. Explained everything to us. How the three different shots work. How the cremation process works. She was wonderful. We gave Karma lots of hugs and kisses. And then we gave her a Hershey Kiss. Because no dog should go to heaven without having tasted chocolate. 🥺 Dr Phillips then administered the shots about 5-7 minutes apart. We were all gathered around Karma: Me, Jay, Tyler, Lindy and my mom. She was surrounded by love as she took her last breath. It was heart-wrenching, but so peaceful and beautiful. After Dr Phillips gave us time to be with Karma, she came back in to shave Karma’s front paws and clip her nails so were could use our kits and get awesome impressions. Less than a week after, Karma’s ashes arrived at our vets office in Greenville. We picked her up yesterday. Everything was top notch. We split her ashes between two urns one for Jay and one for us. The paw impressions, the nose prints and the urns were beautiful. CodaPet and Dr Phillips, thank you for your patience and caring. I’m thankful we entrusted this moment to you.
Dr Ann Gonnering was so sweet! I cannot tell you how her sweetness helped us deal with saying farewell to our buddy, Archie. It’s a tough job, as I only imagine, but she does her job with class, patience and kindness. She was truly lovely and I recommend her 💯
I wanted to do an in home pet euthanasia after thinking about it everyday for 3 months while I saw my girl Sundae decline. I was nervous and scared that the experience would be traumatic but it was anything but that. I couldn't have asked for a better experience for both myself and Sundae. Dr. April Le Blanc was extremely kind and gentle which made me feel at ease and she re-assured me that I was making the right decision. The procedure was very straight forward, all steps explained clearly, and most accommodating to my dog. She fell asleep and peacefully in my arms and never woke up. Please consider CodaPet for your fur baby as it is truly the best option you can give them to cross the rainbow.
